Newcastle has a thriving Chinatown centred around the Stowell Street area. On Sunday 29th January the Chinese community treated onlookers to the traditional New Year lion and dragon dances with the backdrop of the Chinese Arch and St James Park. Kung Hey Fat Choi!

Since 15th October the group Occupy have been camping out at Grey’s Monument as part of the worldwide anti-capitalist demonstrations. They state that “the current system is unsustainable. It is undemocratic and unjust. We need alternatives …”.

These images form part of an ongoing project looking at the character and diversity of a variety of Northern folk at work, and play. Hopefully over the course of a year or so it will form the basis of a book and possibly an exhibition.
